## NPCs

Unnamed capital bow dealer — Younger, curious proprietor of a narrower specialty bow shop near the Guild district (hunting/specialty bows rather than standard militia stock). Genuinely interested in the carbon-steel compound bow's cam mechanism and frame material; bought bow #3 for 24 silver Day 90 after Talon made the case for steel-frame durability. Knows Talon's name and Guild affiliation; watching for collectors or serious hunters who'd commission more, with an informal finder's-cut arrangement if she connects Talon to a buyer.

Halvard Quill (capital jeweler) — Established shop in the merchants' row near the guildhall, unhurried and practiced manner, handles larger sums than most storefronts keep on hand given notice. Bought a small uncut Earth-shaped diamond from Talon Day 90 for 8 gold at good clarity/size; genuinely interested in more, offered better rates for bulk and asked Talon to deal with him exclusively rather than shop pieces around. Day 108: bought the second finished 5.5-carat cut stone (140 gold) and 40 oz of clear small rough (240 gold) for coin, and accepted 70 oz more as payment in kind for a commissioned gift: a small handheld casket of colored gems fit for royalty. He gave Talon his word on exclusivity for now, warned that the total he has absorbed is more than he can sell in a year and that he will hold most of it in his vault to protect the price, and said the casket needs about ten days to make. Said nothing about where the stones came from beyond calling it an Earth mage's work. Thread: see GM Secrets §3.

Greywatch Guild outpost clerk — Younger, a little harried, running a lean short-staffed operation. Briefed Talon and Wynn Day 93 on the missing scout Aldric: routine winter-hazard route-mapping along the old mining road past the waypoints, due to check in 5 days prior, last confirmed position a supply cache half a day past Greywatch. Genuinely relieved capable help arrived, no one had gone looking yet given the outpost's staffing. Day 111: briefed Talon on the pack. Two raids on record: Day 100 at the supply cache half a day past Greywatch (the same cache near where Aldric was found), and Day 104, when a garrison patrol found a waypoint hut a full day out torn open and stripped, the door off its hinges and stores scattered; nobody was hurt (the waypoint crew had pulled back ahead of the weather). The patrol counted four large sets of tracks and a smaller set; sightings suggest five, ranging the old mining road between the first and second waypoints and using broken ground near a ravine east of the road, now a day's travel out. The outpost's posting is B-rank subjugation and calls for a full B-rank-led party, so a C-rank cannot sign it; but nothing bars a C-rank from hunting monsters on his own account under the general parts-gathering rules, and the outpost can send a recorder to count the carcasses if Talon wants the kill certified and forwarded to the capital for the promotion review, which the capital branch decides. Wondered privately whether Talon truly meant to take on the pack, said as much, and did not try to stop him.

Garrison Commander of Greywatch — Formal, wary of anything political, careful with words. Received Talon on short notice Day 96 [audience roll 20 vs DC13] after the outpost clerk vouched for him and word of Aldric's rescue had gone round the garrison. Stance on Talon's interest in the contested strip: will neither encourage nor forbid it, and would not commit the garrison to anything. Says any real charter to build or hold ground out there has to come from the crown, through the capital, and that an unsanctioned settlement could be read as a provocation by Drathmoor. Name not yet recorded. Day 96: agreed to write Talon a letter of introduction to carry to the capital [roll 22 vs DC14, success]. The letter is deliberately narrow: it vouches for Talon's conduct and for his rescue of the scout Aldric, and states that he has surveyed ground in the contested strip and sought proper guidance before doing anything. It does not endorse a settlement, commit the garrison to anything, or name the commander as a backer of the scheme. Sealed with the garrison's seal; Talon is carrying it.

Aldric — Guild scout, found Day 93 alive in a road-collapse gap on the old mining road past Greywatch, self-splinted broken leg from the fall, no infection, days of rationed supplies. Healed fully by Talon (Mastered healing magic). Genuinely grateful, remarked Talon's healing outpaced the Guild's own healers. Heading back to Greywatch with Talon and Wynn to close out the posting.

Garrison supply wagon crew (Day 96) — Heavy freight wagon returning from Greywatch to the capital, hauling empty barrels and crates back for refilling. Driven by a leathery, taciturn garrison teamster, Odo Brack, with one soldier riding the bench beside him and one on the tailboard as escort. Gave Talon and Wynn the rear bed among the crates as a courtesy after the commander's word; no fee discussed. Reached the capital gate at dusk Day 98 after nights at a waypoint station (Day 96) and Ashcombe Hollow camp (Day 97); unloading at the garrison's capital depot afterward. Nothing known of Talon beyond the Aldric rescue and the commander's courtesy.

Garrold Tenn — Textile workshop owner, Harlow Bend, mid-40s. Practical, transactional, not cruel but not warm — runs a small shop (himself, two hired free workers, formerly Finn). Corresponded with Talon by letter (forwarded via Vantree's, collected Day 26); met in person Day 73. Initially asked 30-35 gold for Finn's contract; sold for 30 gold Day 74, no real resistance to the lower figure once Talon raised it — not sentimental about the number, satisfied he'd already gotten his money's worth out of four years of labor. Noted a caravan master had also asked after Finn earlier this year for road labor — Garrold turned that one down, didn't like the look of it. Pointed Talon to Ren (market-side smith/enchanter) for the collar work, having used him for the same when he first acquired Finn.

Ren — Smith/enchanter, market side of Harlow Bend, older man, soot-dark forearms, handles most of the town's enchanting work alongside metalwork. Matter-of-fact, unbothered by whatever's behind a collar job — handles both fittings and removals as routine craft. Removed Finn Vael's collar Day 74 at Talon's request, no questions asked once the transfer paper was in hand.

Garrick Ashworth — Talon's father. Woodcutter, former militia; gruff, dependable. Fully aware of Halvard, the deep-forest activity, and the Selwick/capital travel plans — took the news as a decision rather than a request, and respected the honesty of that framing despite his own frustration. Left 30 silver and the household's trapping routine in his hands before departure. Farewell ended in a genuine, if brief, hug.

Wren Ashworth — Talon's mother, the village herbalist. Sharp-eyed, warm but no-nonsense. Reacted with real fear to the travel plans at first, softened once Talon addressed her concerns directly — never gave an explicit "blessing," just asked him to write often. Received his long-forgotten fever-root as a quiet parting gift.

Mira Ashworth — Talon's younger sister, age 12. Sharp-tongued, curious. Given the cracked traveler's ward charm as a keepsake before departure; their farewell hug ran long.

Kessa — North God style instructor at Selwick's dojo. Scarred forearms, unsentimental, reads bodies at a glance. Took Talon on as a "blank slate" after an evaluation spar showed no technique but real grit. Group sessions roughly every-other-morning, 4 silver/week. Correction-heavy — doesn't praise, but corrects less as things start to stick.

Rennick — Black-market broker in Verrow (alchemical rarities, questionable goods, unregistered magic trinkets). Relationship warm and strong. Connected Talon to the Ledger in Selwick (permission to use his name) and, lacking a capital contact of his own, passed along general guidance and a signaling phrase for finding capital-city information brokers.

The Ledger — Information/goods broker in Selwick, Rennick's referral. Sharp-eyed, unhurried, businesslike rather than warm. Found at a quiet tavern behind the counting-houses in the administrative district; keeps no predictable hours. Delivered on a paid retainer with a genuine find — the crystal-set mana-tap harness Talon now wears (sold at 22 silver, firm on price). Rapport fully warm; higher grades of the harness still available if wanted later.

Halvard — The Whisperwood hermit. Elderly, gruff, guarded, a powerful mage in a warded cabin deep in the forest. Took Talon on as a probationary student, now a genuine mentor — taught Small Flame, Fire Bolt, Fire Wall, and several Magic Formations. Praised Talon's composure during the boar hunt and his self-directed experimentation. Knows the "rush of ideas" cover story (not the full past-life truth); mildly skeptical but hasn't pushed further. No contact since leaving Thornmere.

Lysa Corrin & Dorian Ashe — D-rank archer and E-rank swordsman met in Verrow, fought alongside Talon in the wolf den job and parted warmly. No further contact since Selwick; chapter closed.

Pell — Merchant who hired Talon's first caravan escort (Verrow → Millford Crossing). Paid in full, satisfied with the work. Job closed, no ongoing relationship.

Osha — Independent caravan leader (dried goods, salt) who carried Talon from Verrow to Selwick as a paying passenger. Weathered, businesslike; Talon's shared hunting yield earned easy goodwill. Job concluded on arrival in Selwick, no ongoing thread.

Orsin Kade — Independent focus-crafting enchanter in Selwick. Older, unhurried, blunt but not unkind. Commission complete: converted Talon's spear into the current spear-staff, crystal permanently refitted. No further business open unless Talon commissions something new.

Toma — Young caravan hand on Osha's outfit, wiry and talkative, curious about Talon's spellwork. Easy rapport over the Selwick trip; no deeper connection.

Pemma — Talon's capital landlady, runs the Lowmarket boarding house. Practical, no-nonsense, busy. Enforces house rules (no magic practice on the property) but not unfriendly.

Reya — C-rank dual-blade adventurer, met at the capital Guild tavern. Between parties, selective about job value. Declined the Verrance escort as underpaying for the risk profile, but open to future work if the terms are better. No hostility, parted neutrally.

Corrin — C-rank swordsman, straightforward combat style, no magic. Fought effectively alongside Talon against the unidentified creature at the estate, landing the finishing blow. Parted on warm terms — open to partnering up again.

Mira Fenn — D-rank support caster (healing magic, developing buff magic), met at the capital Guild. Building a track record. Fought through the estate creature encounter without injury. Parted on warm terms — open to future jobs together.

Sera Verrance — Matriarch of the Verrance family, in her forties. Practical, commanding, runs the household logistics personally. Hired the escort for plausible, stated reasons: opportunistic bandit activity on the eastern road since tax caravans stopped running it, and the family's slower pace/exposed camping with young children aboard.

Lord Verrance — Patriarch of the Verrance family, late forties, more scholarly than martial in bearing. Hired Talon to investigate a similar creature incident at the family's capital residence — paid generously and impressed by the result. Now aware the creature wasn't natural. Relationship warm, genuinely grateful.

Bren Dell — Caretaker of the Verrance estate. Survived a 5-day lockdown in the root cellar after the creature attack, shaken but unharmed along with his household. Grateful, no further established rapport.

Sella — Lady Aldwyn's maid, doubling on wine cellar inventory work for the past two months (kitchen-to-lady's-maid over six years of service). Practical, warms quickly once trust is earned. Genuinely impressed by Talon's speed and accuracy on his first day. Confirmed the household rhythm: staff up before dawn, one rotating rest day (hers is market-day), midday is the busiest upstairs stretch and quietest in the cellar. Mentioned in passing that household clerk Marsh handled letters and courier dispatch.

Reva Danning — Guild supervisor at the capital branch. Older, no-nonsense, practical. Approved Talon's D-rank exception onto the House Aldwyn investigation with some reluctance, and now registered a new C-rank spider-nest subjugation quest for him. Confirmed the spider nest job closed cleanly and, at Talon's request, submitted a formal rank-advancement review citing the Verrance escort, the capital-road boar bounty, the spider nest, and the Aldwyn work. No timeline given for a decision. Relationship professional, genuinely more approving now. Day 62: reshuffled quest-board oversight under her branch — a stricter new duty officer now runs the F-E rank board, and a couple of familiar counter clerks rotated to other postings. Standing change going forward, not a one-off. Day 117: received the Greywatch count slip by courier and met Talon at the counter. Had a Guild examiner inspect the four hides, claws, fangs and gallbladders in the wagon at the yard (fresh B-rank pelts, consistent with the slip). Promoted Talon to B-rank on the spot (board stance d20 17 vs DC 10) and swapped his tag. Paid the posted subjugation reward in full: 90 gold (reward raised from the base posting; the pack was broken and the one wounded survivor is no longer a pack). Said a modified posting for the escaped male would go up on the B+ board, and that the rival party that had taken the raised posting was being told the job is closed. Warm toward Talon; noted she had approved his C-rank herself and was not surprised.

Garret — Foreman at a logging camp south of the capital, posted the spider nest subjugation quest. Genuinely relieved and grateful once the job closed. Paid the full 27 gold on the spot. Relationship warm, solid.

Corwin Hess — Steward to House Aldwyn, capital. Thin, precise, unhurried. Successfully guided the Aldwyn leak investigation to a full close: Marsh identified, confessed, and handed to the city watch; Eamon Voss's involvement quietly noted but not formally pursued. Paid Talon a full 5 gold (3 base + 2 bonus) and offered ongoing cellar work, which Talon declined. Relationship ends genuinely warm and respectful — door explicitly left open for future House Aldwyn work.

Lord Aldwyn — Patriarch of House Aldwyn, not yet met directly. The Corvane shipping contract that was under dispute during the investigation finalized without further incident sometime after it closed — no lingering friction reported. Relationship, via Hess, remains cordial; door open for future work.

Ferrin Voss — Independent alchemist, shop near the capital Magic Guild ("Voss — Compounds & Curiosities"). Lean, sharp-eyed, focused; buys unusual biological/research materials, including unidentified-creature remains. Confirmed as a distant cousin (father's side) of the Voss Mercantile family — no involvement in their trade business, but the name carries some weight. Holds several specimens with matching "wrong joint proportions" notes; interested in origin and pattern data rather than raw material value. Gave Talon a rough hand-drawn map of three suspected creature-sighting locations near the capital. Stocks basic alchemical consumables and raw reagents (silverleaf, bitterroot). Currently conducting a live-specimen examination at Corvin Wale's estate — particularly interested in its resistance to Talon's animal calming charm as a data point on how deep the creature's alteration runs. Relationship warm, straightforward business rapport. Day 99: bought the Luster Grizzly's claws (20), fangs (4) and gallbladder from Talon for 13 gold, no haggling; said Luster Grizzly parts come in rarely and are good stock for tonics and antitoxin bases. Genuinely curious about the "wrong joint proportions" pattern rather than just profit-driven; mildly shadowed by distant cousin Eamon Voss's disgrace. Day 117: bought the Luster Grizzly claws, fangs and gallbladders from Talon at 13 gold per bear (52 gold). Said the Day 116 pattern he has been tracking (odd creatures near the capital) has a few new secondhand reports and asked Talon to tell him of anything unusual in the Greywatch country.

Mrs. Fenwick — Housekeeper at House Aldwyn. Stout, gray-haired, sharp-eyed, no-nonsense. Took Talon on as cellar help on Hess's word alone, made clear she's not fully at ease with it. Brief, businesslike interactions only so far.

Marsh — Former House Aldwyn household clerk, source of the leak (a gambling debt exploited by a moneylender working for Eamon Voss). Confronted, confessed, handed to the watch. Thread closed, unlikely to reappear.

Bellamy — Craftsman at the Tinkers' and Artificers' Coalition, capital. Older, wiry, ink-stained hands. Unhurried and skeptical of walk-ins by default, but genuinely engaged once shown real work. Purchased full design rights to the dart-launcher's ball-bearing mechanism outright for 25 gold. Relationship warm, professionally respectful; explicitly invited Talon back for future ideas under any of the Coalition's standard terms. Was juggling an order backlog and a royalty dispute with another Coalition craftsman — backlog cleared Day 92; the Coalition is more free to take on new work now, a good window to bring him something.

Corvin Wale — Private menagerie keeper, capital. Soft-spoken, nervous, genuinely rattled by the escape of one of his specimens. Paid Talon the full 15 gold for live recovery. Told the creature matches a known pattern rather than being a one-off — unsettled, reconsidering his broker relationship going forward. Agreed to let Ferrin Voss examine the live specimen. Relationship warm, appreciative.

Corren — Wale's cart driver. Calm, professional, reliable. No deeper relationship yet.

Instructor Beren Cole — Beginner Earth magic instructor, capital Magic Guild branch. Middle-aged, patient, methodical. Quickly noted Talon's Earth magic already runs well past beginner level and adjusted on the fly, letting him work independently while giving Petrin more direct attention. Relationship still new, professional. Day 64: gets informal recognition within the Magic Guild branch for his teaching results — Talon's unusually fast Earth progress reflects well on him, whatever Cole himself makes of the mismatch between a "beginner" student and that pace.

Hask Dorren — Foreman of Ashcombe Hollow mining camp, northeast of the capital. Weathered, practical, straightforwardly grateful. Accepted the live-alpha arrangement only reluctantly; grateful for the mana-crystal vein news. Will have the vein surveyed and the loose timbers shored. Camp benefiting from the ongoing survey, heading toward a real operational milestone.

Brannoch — Supply-wagon teamster serving Ashcombe Hollow. Lean, dry, hauled the party and the caged alpha to the capital for 9 silver. Thread closed.

Tobin — Petrin's F-rank tavern acquaintance, joined the Guild around the same time as Petrin. They clicked over an afternoon at the capital Guild tavern (Day 14) and cleared the Millrat Sweep together (Day 53). A working partnership now, not just an occasional pairing.

## Locations

Thornmere — Talon's home village, farming/logging community bordering the Whisperwood, Central Continent.

The Whisperwood — Forest at Thornmere's edge; contains Millrun Creek, a greater boar's former territory (now dead), and Halvard's warded cabin.

Verrow — Market town a day's walk east of Thornmere. Magic Guild outpost, Adventurer's Guild branch, market, blacksmith, a black market presence (Rennick), and a town watch handling local law enforcement separately from the Guild.

Millford Crossing — Trade town two days from Verrow, built around a river crossing; larger than Verrow with docks, warehouses, and a market square. Visited once — thin fire-magic selection at the Magic Guild outpost but decent formation books; busier Adventurer's Guild branch with higher-rank (C+) quests; no war-slave/skilled-slave stock through its labor broker.

Selwick — A full-fledged city, roughly a week and a half from Verrow. Full Magic Guild branch, multiple enchanters, a real labor/contract market, and Kessa's North God dojo. Visited and departed — Talon trained, certified in Fire magic, commissioned the spear-staff, and left for the capital.

The Regional Capital — Roughly 2-2.5 weeks from Selwick. Home to master enchanters, capital-tier Magic Guild archives, and auction houses running general labor/skilled-slave sales (e.g. Vantree's, merchant district). Talon's base since session 79.

- Adventurer's Guild (capital branch) — larger than Selwick's, separate quest boards by rank (F-E, D, C, B+) and a dedicated party-finding board.

- Magic Guild (capital branch) — large stone building, full shop stock including advanced elemental texts, formation theory, barrier magic, and a properly Guild-recognized healing magic section. A restricted section requires Advanced-tier certification or higher, or director's dispensation.

- Vantree's Auction House — merchant district. General labor and skilled-slave auctions, twice monthly. Rough pricing: unskilled 8-15 gold, skilled trades 20-40 gold, combat-capable/rare skills 50+ gold.

- North God dojo (capital branch) — where Petrin's training month took place (and Talon trained alongside him during Arc 12-13). Day 64: the senior instructor steps away for personal business; classes shift to junior instructors for the duration. Day 86: with the senior instructor back, the dojo opened a sparring class for students at Intermediate rank or higher; Petrin has been told he can join if he wants.

- Harrow & Voss — property brokers, two streets from the Guild; arranged Talon's Lowmarket lease and the lodge lease. Junior agent Wexler. Options seen, none taken (Day 29): old mill keeper's house (~40 min from the lodge, 17 silver/month); small farmstead (~60 min, needs minor repair, 28 silver/month); forester's house (~60 min from the lodge, ~2 hrs from the capital, well kept, 34 silver/month); forester's house on the road toward the capital (~20 min from the lodge, ~60 min from the capital, needs minor repair, densest woods, 12 silver/month or 33 gold to buy). Capital rooms also seen and passed over near each of the three dojos and near the Magic Guild, singles and doubles both.

- Old hunting lodge (~90 min on foot from the capital, at the tree line; Ashcombe Hollow lies NE) — LEASED, current residence. 30 silver/month (negotiated from 35) plus a 30 silver deposit through Harrow & Voss. Four rooms plus a cellar (Kesh's alchemy workshop), a boar-proof fenced paddock, a rabbit hutch, small garden plots, and mature forest at the property line. A game trail ~10 min out has 3 snare sites; a stream bend holds a fish trap; Corvan handles daily trap checks. Rooms: one each for Talon, Kesh, Petrin, Corvan (Petrin's room goes to a new household member). Talon's Lowmarket room at Pemma's is still on its original lease term.

- Harlow Bend — river town, roughly a week's travel from the capital (reached Day 72 via Thistlewick and four days of overland travel). Built along a bend in the river that gives it its name, with a modest textile trade at its core — loom-houses and dye-vats along the waterfront take advantage of the water for processing. Smaller and more provincial than the capital or even Thistlewick: half-timber buildings, a working-class feel, no grand guild halls. Garrold Tenn's textile workshop is here (see Kesh's brother thread). Weather on arrival Day 72: caught in the leading edge of the autumn storm, heavy rain and wind.

- The Sleeping Ox — gate-district inn near the northeast gate of the capital, on the road in from Greywatch. Low-beamed common room, a fire kept high, rooms about 1 silver each per night, a hot supper for two about 1 silver. Talon and Wynn stayed Day 98.

- Lowmarket — south side, near the river. Affordable district; site of Pemma's boarding house (Talon's old room). Day 65: winter preparation accelerates across the capital — rising demand for warm clothing, firewood, preserved food, blankets, and lamp oil. Lowmarket tailor Ilsa Corr lands a large private commission from a minor noble household (unconnected to Aldwyn or Verrance) for winter livery — a spike in demand for cloth, thread, and labor at her shop. Day 88: takes on additional help to manage the growing workload. ****Day 101 (matured end of Day 100, background): the shop now runs as a proper small operation, additional labor kept on and new supplier relationships in place.** Day 110 (matured end of Day 109, background): Ilsa landed a second private commission from a noble household's retinue and is considering a larger space. Next: Day 118 — Ilsa signs a lease on a larger space in the artisan quarter.

- Ashcombe Hollow — mining camp roughly two days northeast of the capital, current site of the clawtooth digger subjugation. Timber buildings and mine-shaft scaffolding built into a low ridge. Run by foreman Hask Dorren. Lower shafts sealed off due to digger activity and a partial collapse that injured two miners.

- Greywatch — walled border town roughly three days northeast of the capital (a day past Ashcombe Hollow), per Reva Danning. The last real populated town before the Ashen Vale border waypoints — garrison logistics for the border route pass through here, keeping it populated despite the truce: soldiers, quartermasters, and some merchant traffic in cross-border goods when politics allow. The Guild maintains a small outpost here, mostly escort and courier work supplying the waypoints. Past Greywatch, population thins fast — a couple of border waypoints have permanent staff (soldiers, not settlements), and the Guild doesn't post jobs that far out.

- Greywatch land control (established Day 96, via the outpost clerk): the town and its road corridor are administered by the border garrison under the Kingdom of Aurelane's crown, with the garrison commander holding local authority. The land a day or so past Greywatch, where Talon scouted the canyon sites, lies in the contested strip, so it is claimed by neither Aurelane nor Drathmoor in practice, but Aurelane has never formally given up its claim to that side of the strip. Nobody is currently settled there and no one has surveyed it. Any attempt to build or hold ground there would need the garrison commander's blessing at minimum, and probably the crown's, and the truce means an unsanctioned settlement could count as a provocation.

- **Contested strip, candidate sites (scouted Days 93-94, unofficial):** Site A is a shallow box canyon roughly a full day's hard travel past Greywatch on the near edge of the strip: one narrow entrance (easy to watch and hold), high walls that break wind and sightlines, a fast narrow stream that likely won't freeze solid in winter, and mana-ore traces along one wall (a denser pocket lies further along that wall; Talon extracted one raw chunk). Site B is a smaller, shallower-watered canyon about five hours' walk from Site A with a similar defensible shape and a weaker water table. Neither has been surveyed or claimed. A Luster Grizzly pack (4 left after Talon killed a lone bear Day 94) ranges the area. Talon has a rough hand-drawn map of both sites relative to the old mining road. Ownership: see Greywatch land control.

- Hunting/fishing leads (from the Guild): river fishing past the city's claimed fishing rights; a forested belt half a day east (deer/boar, modest value); a two-day-out hill country notice for horned elk (antlers valuable to enchanters) — unconfirmed, possibly stale.

## World/Session Log

(Condensed into narrative arcs through Day 96. Dice-by-dice mechanics are dropped where the skill tables above already hold the current state; plot beats, decisions, and discoveries are preserved.)

Arc 1 (Sessions 1–16) — Awakening and first magic. Talon wakes in Thornmere three days after a fall, the past-life memories tangling with his own. Builds trapping/survival skills around the village, then discovers Fire magic during a Verrow trip. Tracks down Halvard, the Whisperwood hermit, who takes him on as a probationary student after a rough first lesson. A pitfall-trap project for a greater boar and continued family trust-building round out the stretch, capped by a real breakthrough in Small Flame control and the introduction of Fire Bolt.

Arc 2 (Sessions 17–20) — Verrow Guild business. Boar tusks presented as evidence earn a rare double promotion, F→D rank. Meets Lysa Corrin and Dorian Ashe; Lysa demands and wins a sparring match (4-0) before conditionally accepting Talon for a wolf den job. Sells boar materials, gears up (studded leather, cloak, darts), confirms the wolf den job, and makes first contact with Rennick, the black-market broker, via a goodwill-building trial purchase.

Arc 3 (Sessions 21–26) — Wolf den and the Thornmere bounty. The lesser wolf den subjugation is a full success — 6/6 wolves cleared via oil-flask/Fire Bolt ambush tactics — and turns up a strongbox with silver, a ward charm (later cracked, given to Mira), and a water-damaged letter (turned in to the Guild, unresolved). Back in Verrow, splits the strongbox, turns in the letter, buys a hunting spear and mounts the old wand into it (first test misfires, singeing his own leg — shelved for rework). Fresh wolf tracks near Thornmere prompt a capture operation: net-and-fire trap kills one wolf and drives off two others, no injuries. Village elder Bessom pays out a partial bounty. Halvard teaches Fire Wall, with unusually strong early results.

Arc 4 (Sessions 27–40) — Caravan escort to Millford Crossing. A three-week pre-caravan stretch of trapping, chores, and self-directed fire experimentation (flame-arrow shaping, double-bolt, compressed flame point, heat/color variation) alongside formation study. Escorts merchant Pell's caravan to Millford Crossing alongside Lysa and Dorian, inscribing alarm formations at every camp. In Millford Crossing, learns the correct legal term for freeing a purchased slave — "conditional manumission" — and that it's handled as routine enchanter's work (removing a collar is just the same craft used to fit one, run in reverse), though no local auction house offers it directly as a service. On the return trip, an alarm formation catches a three-bandit ambush mid-approach: Talon's opening Fire Bolt fizzles but a spear charge and disarming kick carry the fight, and a refined Fire Arrow drives off a third bandit. One bandit is killed by Lysa and Dorian together (Dorian takes a shallow cut); Talon captures and field-treats the other, recovering a route map worth turning over to the Guild. Back in Verrow, Pell pays the full escort fee (35 silver each), the prisoner is handed to the town watch, and the map goes to the Guild for verification.

Arc 5 (Sessions 41–47) — Planning the road to Selwick. Guild research confirms Selwick as the realistic next destination and the capital as a long-term horizon. Telling the family lands badly at first — Wren reacts with real fear, Garrick with quiet frustration at not being consulted — but Talon recovers by being direct about it being a decision, not a request, while still wanting their blessing. Wren never gives an explicit yes, only asks him to write. Halvard takes the travel news in stride but Talon's first binding formation lesson goes catastrophically wrong — the containment inverts and briefly locks his own arm before Halvard intervenes, earning a flat "no solo practice" restriction. Departure prep includes gifts for the family (fever-root for Wren, the ward charm for Mira) and turning the household trapping operation over to Garrick. Books passage to Selwick with caravan leader Osha (8 silver, no combat obligation but goodwill expected). A two-day marsh-strider hunt clears out a standing Guild bounty for 44 silver, and a stop at the alchemist stocks venom doses, antitoxin, and clarity draughts before departure.

Arc 6 (Sessions 48–53) — Arrival in Selwick. Ten days of caravan travel bring real gains in mana control (via "Mana Sensing and Control: Fundamentals") and cleaner Fire Bolt/compressed-flame work; meets Toma, a caravan hand, along the way. In Selwick: schedules the Intermediate Fire certification exam (three weeks out), sells off fully-absorbed primers, and signs on at Kessa's North God dojo as a "blank slate" after an evaluation spar shows no technique but real grit. Secures a communal workshop and begins real study of Water, Wind, and Earth fundamentals — magic here being a learned discipline, not affinity-gated. Tracks down the Ledger on Rennick's referral (a rocky first search, but the name lands) and begins a working relationship, though a church visit to ask about learning healing magic goes over poorly. First ball-bearing dart-launcher redesign attempt fails outright.

Arc 7 (Sessions 54–65) — The Selwick grind. A long stretch of dojo sessions and structured magic practice drives most of the current spell list from Developing toward Reliable and beyond — Fire Wall, Torch-point flame, Wind push, Waterball, Earth pebble, Multi-Fire-Arrow, Explosion magic, and Binding formation all see real breakthroughs during this arc, alongside a second, successful ball-bearing attempt. The Ledger delivers a genuine find — the crystal-set mana-tap harness, purchased for 22 silver and fitted personally. One exceptional day nets four tier-ups at once. Talon attends a traveling magic exhibition, then tracks down enchanter Orsin Kade and commissions the wand-to-spear-staff conversion. Library research turns up barrier magic (nullification fields) as a new discipline to pursue. The arc closes with the Magic Guild certification exam: a strong full-power Fire Bolt impresses the examiner, minor control slips elsewhere don't sink it, and Talon earns Intermediate certification in Fire magic.

Arc 8 (Sessions 66–72) — Closing out Selwick. A short-term merchant escort wraps cleanly despite a scavenger-pack scare. Barrier magic study begins in earnest, and a dense run of breakthroughs follows: Earth shaping & sourcing, Explosion magic, and Water phase-shift all reach Reliable; Wind push, Binding formation, and the barrier nullification field follow soon after. New derivative spells open up — Ice Fog/Mist and Ice Slick (from Water phase-shift), Fire Rain R&D (once Multi-Fire-Arrow hit Mastered), Mini-Meteor (Fire Bolt + Earth pebble), and Earth Spikes/Earth Weapon (from Earth shaping). Talon collects the finished spear-staff from Orsin, accepts two capital-direction quests (a Guild-to-Guild courier run and a capital-road bounty), and confirms the long-stale farmland pest-culling job has finally been claimed by someone else. Before departing, sells back superfluous primers and picks up a Light magic primer. Selwick chapter closes — no lingering relationships deep enough to warrant a goodbye beyond what's already been said.

Arc 9 (Sessions 73–79) — The road to the Capital. A cold stretch for magic progress early on gives way to real gains — Light magic gets off the ground, and Wind Leap & Cushion, Ice Fog/Mist, Earth Spikes, and Mini-Meteor all see breakthroughs over the following weeks. At the waypoint town, a farmer's detailed account and a dismissive watch post set up the capital-road bounty: an oversized, scarred, genuinely territorial boar finds Talon first and lands a serious hit, and under real pressure both Fire Wall and Multi-Fire-Arrow — ordinarily automatic — fall apart. The prepared fallback holds: a braced spear-staff thrust ends the fight outright. Talon negotiates a fair payout (22 silver) with the carcass as proof. After a delay finding onward transport, a new ride is caught near a road junction, and the final stretch of the journey brings two more breakthroughs (Earth Spikes and Light magic both reaching Competent) before the cart rolls into the outskirts of the Regional Capital.

Arc 10 (Sessions 80+) — Ashcombe Hollow and the road home. Talon, Petrin, and Kesh take foreman Hask Dorren's subjugation of a 14-strong clawtooth digger pack (Guild estimate ~12), leaning on Life Presence Sensing: ambush spikes, collapsed and trapped tunnel entrances, and a smoke-out at the main entrance break the pack (13 dead). Petrin is badly clawed finishing a bound alpha; Talon's healing magic reaches Mastered the next morning. The last alpha is calmed and charmed, then caged in a wheeled stone cage (Earth shaping & sourcing reaches Mastered). Talon finds a low-grade mana-crystal vein under the den and reports it to Hask. Paid 22 gold + 52 silver; Kesh unlocks Tier 2 alchemy and Petrin's herb ID reaches Developing. The party leaves on Brannoch's supply wagon (Day 23) with the caged alpha for the capital; a bandit ambush at a road cut is broken by Earth Spikes and a shouted warning (2 dead, 3 fled, 1 wounded archer refused help and walked away), leaving a note that suggests someone fed the band the wagon's schedule.

Arc 11 (Days 24–27) — Wolves, Wale, and the Hollis creature. Returning from Ashcombe Hollow, the wagon is met by the Highland wolf pack; two Multi-Fire-Arrow volleys kill all five, with no injuries. Corvan and Petrin process the carcasses at the lodge while Talon builds a hand cart (a bad morning of uncooperative wood, finished that afternoon). On Day 26 Talon takes the hides, fangs, and the caged digger alpha to the capital: the Highland bounty pays 90 silver, materials sell to Ferrin Voss (86 silver), the alpha and cage go to menagerie keeper Corvin Wale for 9 gold, and Vantree's forwards the buyer's reply about Kesh's brother (Garrold Tenn, Harlow Bend). That evening Talon tells Kesh where her brother is but keeps the resale letter private. On Day 27 he accepts the tree-line farmstead investigation, meets the Hollis family, and kills the crystal-implanted creature east of the farm (a mana-crystal sliver was lodged along a surgical scar), sells the materials to Voss for 41 gold, and collects 13 gold from the Guild. Kesh meets her mother, Nira Vael, who is cold toward Talon.

Arc 12 (Days 28-43) Preparing for the training month. Talon rescues cartographer's apprentice Ilren Pask at Hale's survey camp (13 gold), interviews all nine auction lots, buys a covered wagon, six ore samples and two archive texts, and hands the ambush scrap map to Reva. Petrin reaches Competent Earth and announces a training plan; Kesh unlocks Tier 3. Talon leads a wild sounder home (now 13 boars) and Corvan finishes the enlarged boar shelter. On Day 31 the household moves Talon, Petrin (and later Kesh) into the capital double room for a month of North God dojo and Guild Earth classes; Petrin buys a round shield. At Vantree's Day 33 auction Talon buys Wynn (Lot 9) for 94 gold and sends her home with Kesh. A run of breakthroughs follows: deepened-trust charm, footwork, Buffs, Earth Shard, Earth Spikes, all six ores and Plant growth R&D. Talon visits the lodge Days 42-43, hunts with Wynn, and returns to the capital with pelts, wolf hides and salted meat.

Arc 13 (Days 44-58) The training month. Talon sells the pelts, hides and meat, then spends the fortnight on dojo mornings, Earth shaping (purified iron and tin, refined carbon, steel), Mini-Meteor, Explosion, Debuffs, Plant growth, and generalized Calm and Charm (tested first on a paid volunteer, Ilse of Lantern Row, then on strangers). His footwork reaches Mastered and North God Intermediate rank on Day 52. He builds two compound bows and, after a bowyer's advice (Day 46), reworks them in steel, but both come out flawed. Petrin's Earth reaches Mastered (Stone Bulwark), his swordsmanship rises to Reliable, he buys an iron helm, and with Tobin clears the Millrat Sweep. Kesh unlocks Tier 5 (Day 50), masters two Water spells (Purifying Rinse, Swift Extraction), and comes to the capital on her own to study, with Talon funding a new alchemy book and herbs.

Arc 14 (Days 59-81) — Harlow Bend. Petrin is promoted to E-rank on Day 61 (on the strength of the Millrat Sweep and the digger subjugation) and moves into a Guild-subsidized room. Talon sells the season's hide stock, tells Corvan he has longer-term plans for him, works refined carbon into the compound bows and the darts (Day 62), and gives Wynn a steel compound bow, carbon arrows and his old hunting knife (Day 63). Days 64-73: Talon, Kesh and Wynn travel to Harlow Bend by way of Thistlewick, arriving Day 72 in the leading edge of the autumn storm. They find Kesh's brother Finn at Garrold Tenn's textile workshop (Day 73); Talon buys and frees him on Day 74 for 30 gold, and Kesh takes the price onto her own debt. The dojo's senior instructor returns Day 76, and Finn joins the lodge on Day 81.

Arc 15 (Days 82-90) — Finn settles in, and a crafting stretch. Day 82 in the capital: Finn meets his mother Nira, Talon thanks her privately, Finn is introduced to Attunement magic at the Magic Guild, and Kesh's two new alchemy books finally unblock her Tier 6. Days 83-85: Talon reworks a steel crossbow, upgrades the wagon (springs, steering wheel, a drive-ring on the rear axle with a small certified mana crystal, an insulated interior), builds two more carbon-steel compound bows, and masters mana-crystal ore and diamond as shaping materials. Days 86-89: Sleep magic and Meteor reach their new tiers, Kesh's fourth Water spell reaches Reliable, Finn gets the crossbow and starts riding out with Wynn, Talon charms two elk to pull the wagon, and Corvan's contract target (15 gold) is set. Day 90 in the capital: Talon sells hides, food, a bandit blade, a diamond (8 gold) and a bow, orders the elk harness and saddles, sets Petrin's target (20 gold and D-rank), and accepts a missing-scout job toward the Ashen Vale border.

Arc 16 (Days 91-96) — The Ashen Vale border. Winter begins Day 91. Talon and Wynn travel northeast by way of Ashcombe Hollow to Greywatch (a forced march falls a day short), find the scout Aldric stranded with a broken leg in a collapsed stretch of old mining road, and Talon heals him; the outpost pays 30 gold and is favorably disposed. Scouting past Greywatch (Days 93-94), they find two candidate sites in the contested strip, and Talon kills a lone Luster Grizzly with a dome-and-spear ambush; the hide and 20 portions of meat come back with them. On Day 96 the garrison commander declines to encourage or forbid a settlement, says any charter must come from the crown through the capital, and writes a narrow letter of introduction; they take a garrison supply wagon back toward the capital.
